What is a Typing Test?
This typing test measures words per minute and accuracy in real time as you type against a randomly selected passage, using grapheme-aware character comparison so accented characters and complex scripts are compared correctly rather than byte-by-byte. Each character in the target passage is color-coded live: green for correctly typed, red for incorrect, and a blue cursor marker for your current position.
A distinctive feature is Hindi support that does not require a Hindi keyboard layout — type using familiar English letters (like "namaste") and a built-in phonetic transliteration engine converts your keystrokes into Devanagari script in real time, letting English-keyboard users practice Hindi typing without installing an input method editor.
Words per minute is calculated as correctly typed characters divided by five (a standard average word length), divided by elapsed time in minutes — so WPM only credits characters you actually got right, not raw keystroke count. Accuracy is the percentage of typed characters that matched the target text at each position. The test ends automatically either when your selected duration expires or when you complete the full passage with zero outstanding errors.
How it works
Typing Test reads your input from the panel above, applies accurate wpm and cpm calculations, and shows a result you can copy or download. Options stay visible so you can iterate without reloading the page.

Common Use Cases & Examples
- Job application typing assessment prep: Practice with a matching duration (like 1 or 2 minutes) to get comfortable with timed typing pressure before a formal assessment.
- Hindi typing practice without a Devanagari keyboard: Use the phonetic transliteration mode to practice Hindi typing fluency using only a standard English keyboard layout.
- Casual speed tracking: Run a quick 30-second test periodically to see whether your typing speed and accuracy are improving over time.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's considered a good typing speed?+
Average typing speed is 35-40 WPM. Good typists achieve 50-70 WPM, while professional typists often exceed 80 WPM. Focus on accuracy first - it's better to type 40 WPM accurately than 60 WPM with many errors.
How is WPM calculated?+
WPM (Words Per Minute) is calculated as (characters typed ÷ 5) ÷ minutes. We use the standard formula where 5 characters (including spaces) equal one word, providing consistent measurements across different texts.
Should I focus on speed or accuracy?+
Always prioritize accuracy over speed. Typing fast with errors is counterproductive as you'll need to spend time correcting mistakes. Build accuracy first, then gradually increase speed - this approach leads to better long-term results.
How often should I take typing tests?+
Take typing tests weekly to track progress, but don't test daily as it can become discouraging. Spend most of your time practicing proper technique and building muscle memory through consistent typing exercises.

Practice Hindi typing fluency without learning a new keyboard layout.
Track improvement over repeated short practice sessions.
When to Use Typing Test
- Measuring your current typing speed and accuracy as a baseline
- Practicing Hindi typing without needing a Devanagari keyboard layout
- Warming up before a job assessment or timed typing exercise
- Tracking typing improvement over repeated short practice sessions
Advantages
- Live WPM, accuracy, and error tracking with no page reload
- Grapheme-aware comparison for accurate results with complex scripts
- Built-in Hindi phonetic transliteration for English-keyboard users
- Multiple duration options from 30 seconds to 5 minutes
Tips
- Focus on accuracy first — since WPM only counts correctly typed characters, excessive mistakes lower your effective speed even if you type fast.
- Try a shorter 30-second duration for quick warm-ups and a longer 2–5 minute duration for a more representative speed measurement.
- For Hindi mode, type common syllables slowly at first to learn how the phonetic transliteration maps English letters to Devanagari characters.
Common Mistakes
Typing too fast without checking accuracy, which lowers your effective WPM since only correct characters count.
Expecting the Hindi mode to require a Devanagari keyboard layout — it is designed for standard English key input with phonetic conversion.
Switching language or duration mid-test, which is disabled while the test is active to keep results consistent.
Summary
Choose your language and duration above, then type the passage to see your live WPM, accuracy, and error count — and try the Hindi phonetic mode if you want to practice Devanagari typing on a standard keyboard.
